Egton, once an important township, now a tranquil village set in traditional farmland with rolling green fields. Egton was once an important market and perhaps because of this now holds the largest country show on the North York Moors. Egton show is always in August and generally on the Wednesday after Danby show. More information at The Egton show website
Today there are several country inns in Egton, a church (St Hilda's), a Doctor's surgery, a village hall, and other businesses, including J W Mortimer Ltd an agricultural engineer, and James Godbold a wroughtironsmith. The church was built in 1878 and replaced the old church and graveyard of St Hilda which is approximately half a mile out of the village on the road to Glaisdale. The Doctor's surgery is somewhat famous in medical circles as it was here that a computer program for keeping patients records, (EMIS), was developed.
