Goathland village has been made famous in recent years by being the main setting for the popular television series "Heartbeat" and the station was used to represent Hogsmeade Station in the recent Harry Potter films.
The Goathland Exhibition Centre has displays covering all aspects of local life.
The 70ft high Mallyan Spout waterfall can be reached by a footpath close to the Mallyan Spout Hotel which offers the opportunity for a pleasant walk. In the 19th century the village was a spa town and as a result there are many hotrels and guest houses.
Enjoy a walk of some 3.5 miles along the now disused track of the railway line built by George Stephenson between Goathland and Grosmont. Goathland has a station on the North York Moors Steam railway. This railway is run by volunteers and is one of the longest stretches of steam railway in the country. It runs from Grosmont in the North to Pickering in the South. More information about the railway is found here
The rich past of Goathland has left us with, Standing Stones, Ann's Cross and in Wheeldale a mile of Roman Road which runs North from the Roman camp at Cawthorn, dating back to around the 1st century AD the road is owned by English Heritage. The village has a history dating back to the times of the vikings. In 1109 King Henry I granted land to Osmund the priest of the hermitage of Goathland, then called Godelandia. The village has also been recorded as being called 'Godesland'.
