Upper Esk Valley Communities

The area of the upper Esk Valley goes as far as Glaisdale in the East and the Esklets at Westerdale in the West. This area was mostly a lake hemmed in by ice from Castleton to Crunkly Gill near Lealholm. Crunkly Gill is a deep ravine that was formed when the waters of the lake broke through the moraine left by the receding glacier as the ice melted.
