This village and surrounding dales may have been thus named because it is the most westerly dale in the Esk Valley. The River Esk rises here where several becks known as the Esklets and other streams merge to form the Esk.
Once noted for it's pure bred shorthorn cattle the parish contains many farms as well as Westerdale village. Westerdale is surrounded on all sides by the rugged moorlands and is described as a quiet dale tucked away in the Heart of the North Yorkshire Moors.
The prefix of the Post Code for Westerdale is YO21-.
Westerdale News is a website run by a villager and is always up to date with news from the village and surrounding area.
Westerdale has a select few country walks. There is evidence of some early settlements here with a field system being noted by the ordnance survey maps and also mention of several circular hut 'cavities' in Bulmers History & directory of North Yorkshire 1890.
Baysdale Abbey lies some 3 1/2 miles to the West of Westerdale and was once home to an order of Cistercian nuns.
